Russell Rowland

Russell has been consulting with other writers for almost twenty years now, and several of his authors have gone on to publish their work to great acclaim. He works closely with his authors in an effort to understand what they’re trying to accomplish rather than telling them how they should write. He has worked with writers in many different genres, including non-fiction.

The-Crown-CoverAmong those who have become published are Nancy Bilyeau, who writes:

“Russell gave me notes and critically needed feedback while I wrote my three novels, The Crown, The Chalices and The Tapestry, for Touchstone/Simon & Schuster. In classes and private workshops, he helped me with character, tension, clarity and flow. He told me what I needed to hear while always being a source of encouragement.”

The Chalice

One of Russell’s more recent success stories is Alexandra Burt, whose debut novel, Remember Mia, has garnered wide national attention. Alexandra has this to say about his services:

My first experience working with Russell Rowland was through Gotham Writers Workshop. During the duration of the class I wrote the first draft of my novel and then joined his private workshop. Throughout the workshop, Russell gave me invaluable advice and his encouragement made all the difference. He was generous with his time and lent support, even to this date he is only an email away. Russell is an acclaimed novelist and I admire him as a valued member of the writing community and I respect him for his talent as well as his teaching ability.

Jenny, or J.S. Breukelaar, is another of Russell’s former students who has recently published a novel that has gotten great reviews. Jenny has this to say:

“Russell Rowland was my instructor at Gotham Writers Workshop. He oversaw the early stage of my first novel. I then went on to join Russell’s private workshops and he continued to mentor me through the final stages of the novel, which was picked up by a highly respected NYC agent. Russell is as meticulous in his criticism as he is heartfelt in his support, generous in extending to students the benefit of his many literary and publishing connections, and a talented, acclaimed novelist in his own right. Working with Russell was one of the best things that happened to my career and I now consider myself lucky to call him a colleague and a friend.”

Russell also worked with R. S. Guthrie, creator of the Jame Pruett mystery series. R.S. says “Russell has been my editor for several years and I use 95+% of his edits. He takes my work and with his keen eye for details, nuance, flow, and setting, will take a scene and help me render it magical. He has a true gift of the editorial eye and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my work.”
